Can You Return a Car After Buying It?

In most cases, you cannot return a car after buying it. Car sales are generally final under U.S. law. Unlike electronics or clothing, cars purchased at a dealership are not covered by the Federal Trade Commission's Cooling-Off Rule (which applies only to door-to-door sales, not dealership purchases). There is no federal "buyer's remorse" protection for vehicle purchases.

Exceptions where returning or canceling may be possible:

Dealer return policy: A small number of dealerships voluntarily offer a short return window (typically 2–7 days or under a set mileage limit) as a customer satisfaction policy. This is not required by law and varies by dealer. Always ask about any return policy before signing.

Lemon laws: All 50 states have lemon laws that protect buyers of defective new vehicles. If your car has a significant defect that substantially impairs its use, value, or safety, and the dealer or manufacturer fails to fix it after a reasonable number of attempts (typically 3–4 tries for the same issue, or the car has been out of service for 30+ cumulative days), you may be entitled to a replacement vehicle or refund. Lemon law protections vary by state. Used vehicles may also be covered in some states.

Financing falls through: In some states, dealers sell vehicles on "spot delivery" — you take the car before financing is fully finalized. If the lender ultimately rejects the loan, the dealer may be required to unwind the sale. This is also called a "yo-yo" or conditional sale situation.

Online purchases: Vehicles purchased entirely online through certain platforms (such as Carvana, CarMax online, or Vroom) typically come with a stated return window (commonly 7 days or up to 400 miles). Review the specific return terms before buying.

Before you buy: If you have any doubts, ask the dealer for their return policy in writing before signing. Once your signature is on a traditional sales contract, your options are very limited.
